Caves Above and Clouds Below
This playful trompe l'oeil is a facsimile of my sketchbook from the MaréMotrice artist residency in Greenland, summer 2023. Drawn while passing through Sermilik Fjord, I didn’t write in my journal how long this relatively short sail took us, but I can tell you it was not in a straight line. You go where the ice is not and when it’s everywhere, you are doing a lot of turning and slow motion loops and calculated detours and polite squeezes between bergs. This also means you see everything from just about every angle! The extra time it takes to get somewhere means more time for observation (and, in the cold, more tea). I wrote in my sketchbook, "Seeing the Brückner and Heim Glaciers from afar - A glittering field of mirages with the perspective rising seemingly straight up into the air. They mound up. [We anchored much closer to these glaciers, which both originate from the Greenland ice sheet.] It’s hard to come inside, there is too much to see."
