Tasiilaq (sketchbook trompe l'oeil)
This playful trompe l'oeil is a facsimile of my sketchbook from the MaréMotrice artist residency in Greenland, summer 2023. Tasiilaq is where we first landed in Greenland, after sailing for 4 days from Iceland. We anchored in the harbor at the bottom of a ladder which led up to the docks. We walked on a trail behind the town, looking out for a polar bear that had recently been spotted, and wrote postcards by a lake. From this viewpoint on the boat's deck is where I washed my hair in a bucket with water from a tea kettle, and ate an ice cream bar with my boatmates before we sailed off to our next anchorage. Tasiilaq is the largest town on Greenland's eastern coast. Like all the towns we went to, its buildings come in a smattering of blue, yellow, and red (with the occasional green) perched on rocks by the sea’s edge.
